About videdot

Minutiae about the project

Just a few bits and pieces that have no other home.

Why ?

It's pronounceable and it says video (in my tiny, little head at least) and that was enough for me to begin with.

But after living with the name for a while, more things began to occur. We can spin a little meaning:

Latin / English
vide - imperative singular of Latin videre - 'to see'.
dot - English, a dot but most likely a 'picture element' - pixel.
becomes see the dot.
Latin / Geek
vide - 'see', as above.
dot - in regular expressions a dot is typically used as a placeholder for any element.
becomes see anything.

Naturally, the geek in me prefers the latter.

The logotype

The text is set in Frutiger italic, designed by Adrian Frutiger in 1975 for Charles de Gaulle Airport. Bitstream offer a version of Frutiger as Humanist 777.

The bar underneath is the thickness of the horizontal portion of the e and its top is twice that thickness from the bottom of the text. It extends from level with the leftmost tip of the v to halfway between the tip of the tail and the rightmost point of the t.

The blue is #0033ff and the red is #ff0000 in hexadecimal RGB notation.
